Becky asked:

I am currently doing A-Level Home Economics coursework on how the ‘credit crunch’ has changed peoples’ spending habits, and how people have adapted to cope with the economic downturn.

I would really appreciate any tips you have on how you are trying to save money on your food bills and how you have changed your eating and shopping habits since the recession started.

I buy no name products, I don’t make rash purchases or over shop just because something is on sale. I try to follow the weekly flyers and will shop where the biggest sales are that week. I don’t purchase snack foods or pop with my groceries–those are purchased individually, if at all. I use coupons–but only for the items I actually use or need, and try to use them when it will save me even more. And most importantly–I try not to shop when I haven’t eaten. It’s easier to stick to the list if I have a meal before grocery shopping. ♥Instantkarma♥♫

Eat at home, pack your lunch

-When buying groceries, I go to Costco or Sam’s Club for things I use a lot of, it saves money in the long run
-Plan ahead, plan out my meals for the week
    -Buy generic
-Really look at the prices (notice the amount per unit price as well)

    Shopping for clothes:
-Shop at affordable stores (Target, Old Navy, Carlotte Russe, NY & Co. )
-Subscribe to weekly ads so you know who has what sales going on
-Buy clothes online… If you know exactly what you’re looking for and what size you need, type it into Google Shopping. If you type in “Black button down sweater” it will bring up all kinds of stores that sell that and that way you can find the store that sells it for the least

    COUPONS!

    Going out to eat:

Me and my friends always look up happy hour specials. Especially if you live in a college town. There’s a place near my apt called Trader Vics that has a 6 oz hamburger they sell from 3-6pm for $3. Normally its $12. Kirstin
